During the 1980’s, as a result of immense petitioning by the local community, the then Box Hill City Council granted permission for a venue purely devoted to creativity, arts and craft. The vacated Box Hill Electricity Depot acted as a community arts venue from 1987 until a new purpose-built design was opened in October 1990.
Architectural firm Gregory Burgess Pty Ltd designed the building, and the sensitive environmental surrounds are the result of collaboration between two designers Kevin Taylor and Kate Cullity with consultation with local artists and potential users. A thriving creative community was the outcome and the popularity of the centre today is testament to the foresight of the architects and the vision of council and the community.
Surrounding the light filled building are beautiful open garden spaces filled with mosaics and stunning art pieces by the local community. The setting provides tranquil spaces for reflection and creativity. The Gallery provides support for local community artists as well as showcasing professional exhibitions from national and international artists.
The centre offers a wide range of activities for adults and children during school terms, and a variety of art and craft activities during the school holidays. Box Hill Community Arts Centre is also home to many local arts and community groups and is a meeting place where people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy the arts.
On the day of Open House Melbourne, our regular users will be hosting a number of showcases and displays.
Come and enjoy some traditional Irish music with our regular hirer Celtic Jam and an enchanting ukulele performance by Des Mahoney and the BHCAC ukulele students.

Rich in history and built before WWII, the Box Hill Town Hall played a key role in the war effort for the local community. Today the building is described by the Heritage Review as ‘an excellent example of austere classical revival design applied to a major monumental public building.’ The building houses a grand function hall and lower hall, majestic meeting rooms and old Box Hill Council Chambers with architectural design features preserved. Built in 1884, Schwerkolt Cottage is an original pioneer’s stone cottage. The cottage has been restored to its original condition and furnished in the style of the period. The cottage, named after August and Paulina Schwerkolt, who migrated from Germany as newlyweds in 1849, was built from materials found mostly on the site. Visitors can explore the delightful cottage, barn, wine cellar, smokehouse, the orchard and machinery shed. This popular attraction is open to the community on weekends.
